“Affirmation” by Assata Shakur*
___
I believe in living.
I believe in the spectrum
of Beta days and Gamma people.
I believe in sunshine.
In windmills and waterfalls,
tricycles and rocking chairs.
And i believe that seeds grow into sprouts.
And sprouts grow into trees.
I believe in the magic of the hands.
And in the wisdom of the eyes.
I believe in rain and tears.
And in the blood of infinity.
I believe in life.
And i have seen the death parade
march through the torso of the earth,
sculpting mud bodies in its path.
I have seen the destruction of the daylight,
and seen bloodthirsty maggots
prayed to and saluted.
I have seen the kind become the blind
and the blind become the bind
in one easy lesson.
I have walked on cut glass.
I have eaten crow and blunder bread
and breathed the stench of indifference.
I have been locked by the lawless.
Handcuffed by the haters.
Gagged by the greedy.
And, if i know any thing at all,
it’s that a wall is just a wall
and nothing more at all.
It can be broken down.
I believe in living.
I believe in birth.
I believe in the sweat of love
and in the fire of truth.
And i believe that a lost ship,
steered by tired, seasick sailors,
can still be guided home
to port.
hate hate hate
chicken basket’s great
succotash on my plate
you been lookin like da bait
snack or menu late
i take over this state
fonky wit da papes
shawty bakin cakes
“i love long albums…” — was the validation from a collaborator to not fear completing my record the way i wanted. i wanted the feelings to play out in full, i wanted the mission to be carried out the way i experienced music at Bohemian Caverns, where you would grow with the band on stage, arriving at a healthier, newer outlook that the composition, and the artists’ visions would take us. it wouldn’t matter wtf was goin on outside, what was happening in our lives outside of this place — all that mattered was this present moment, right here, witnessing this powerful energy being shared. My brother Cody's 1st album. If you've heard my music, you've heard him help construct all of it. I'm so proud of him. If you like Hendrix/The Beatles this is especially for you. Very wavy and dreamy. Drew Kid
I met Anthony at a show I did during my last school year. He hit me about playing the release show of his first record "Still" in August. It's crazy how our similar paths crossed. This is his story. Drew Kid
Was blessed to have contributed to Cecily's latest EP. It was such a focused time helping craft two of the songs (Clumsy, No Room for Fear) with Cecily & Malik Hunter. Give us a Grammy! namsayinnn Drew Kid
